Running a business is so demanding. But when your nervous system is dysregulated, every decision, delay, email, and customer complaint can feel bigger than it actually is.
You may become impatient, reactive, easily overwhelmed, or unable to focus. You avoid important tasks because your mind feels overloaded, then feel guilty because nothing is getting done. Over time, this can affect the way you communicate with customers, employees, business partners, and the people you love.
You are not unmotivated or “bad at business.” Your body may simply be operating in survival mode.
Supporting your nervous system does not have to be complicated. Here are three simple tools that can help.
1. Take Longer Exhales
There is tension in your shoulders, and you're taking shallow breaths. Breathe in gently and make your exhale longer than your inhale. For example, inhale for four counts and exhale for six. Longer exhales can help slow your breathing and signal to your body that it is safe to settle down. Start with 2 minutes, then gradually increase to 5 minutes. Stop if you become lightheaded. Keep your breathing gentle, not deep or forced.
2. Go Outside and Look Up at the Sky
Step away from your phone, computer, and whatever problem is demanding your attention. Go outside and look up at the open sky. Allow your eyes to take in the distance, colors, clouds, and natural light. This can shift your attention away from tunnel vision and give your mind a break from constantly scanning for problems. Do not stare directly at the sun.
3. Create Predictability
A stressed nervous system does not need more chaos. Simple routines can reduce the number of decisions your brain has to make.
Try starting work at a consistent time, eating meals at the same time, creating set hours for answering messages, and ending your workday with the same simple routine. Predictability can help your body stop feeling like it must stay on alert all day.
Nutrition matters too. B vitamins support energy production and normal nervous-system function. Magnesium supports nerve signaling, muscle relaxation, and sleep. Foods such as leafy greens, beans, eggs, fish, avocado, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can help provide these nutrients.
Herbs also offer support. Ashwagandha helps the body manage ongoing stress and support healthier cortisol levels. Tulsi, also called holy basil, has traditionally been used to support calm, mental clarity, and resilience during stressful periods.
Your business needs strategy, but it also needs a business owner who can think clearly, communicate well, and recover from stress. Supporting your nervous system is not separate from running your business. It is part of protecting it.
